Let Your Words Be the Words of God: Speaking According to Scripture by Dr. Josimar Salum

Let Your Words Be the Words of God: Speaking According to Scripture by Dr. Josimar Salum

To live, speak, and reason according to the Word of God, we must ensure that our communication is shaped by biblical vocabulary and Scripture-thinking.

Using words foreign to the Bible can lead to concepts that subtly deviate from the truth. The Word of God is not just the source of truth—it is the only safe language for doctrine, correction, reproof, and instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). If we speak what God has not spoken, we may be adding human reasoning to divine revelation.

The Scripture doesn’t teach that truth is an abstract concept or philosophical principle. It reveals plainly and consistently that God Himself is the truth. Let’s ground that firmly in the Word of God.

   1. God Is the Truth

   Deuteronomy 32:4

“He is the Rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is He.”

God is not just truthful—He is truth Himself.

   2. Jesus Is the Truth

   John 14:6

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

Jesus doesn’t say He has the truth—He says He is the truth. Truth is not something apart from God; it is the Person of God revealed.

   3. The Spirit Is Truth

   1 John 5:6

“…And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.”

The Holy Spirit is not merely a communicator of truth—He is the Truth. This unites Father, Son, and Spirit in their essential identity as the Truth.

   4. God’s Word Is Truth Because It Comes from Him

   John 17:17

“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”

Why is the Word truth? The Truth by whom

not by which that we are sacrificed is not the Scriptures, the Truth comes from God who is Truth. There is no separation between God, His Word, and the Truth—they are one.

   5. Truth Is Not Conceptual—It Is Personal in God

Nowhere in the Bible is truth treated as an impersonal force or abstract. Instead:

Truth is God’s character (Deuteronomy 32:4).

Truth is Christ’s identity (John 14:6).

Truth is the Spirit’s nature (1 John 5:6).

Truth is what God speaks (John 17:17; Psalm 119:160).

Conclusion: Speak the Truth—That Is, Speak God’s Words

So when we declare the truth, we are not presenting ideas—we are proclaiming God Himself as He has revealed Himself. Any speech that does not come from Him cannot be truth, because truth is not separate from who He is.

So when we live, speak, and reason according to the Word of God we:

   1. Speak According to the Word—He Is the Only Light

   Isaiah 8:20

“To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”

Anything not aligned with the written Word is darkness. The standard is “the law and the testimony”—Scripture itself. No new philosophy, terminology, or modern expression can replace the vocabulary God has inspired.

   2. The Word Is Truth—Only God’s Speech Defines What Is True

   John 17:17

“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”

   Psalm 119:160

“Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.”

Truth is not based on man’s interpretation. Truth is what God says. If we speak things God has not spoken—especially using words not found in His Word—we risk substituting human concepts for divine truth.

   3. Jesus Spoke Nothing But What the Father Gave Him

   John 12:49–50

“For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak… whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.”

Jesus never relied on independent logic or man’s vocabulary. He modeled submission to God’s words alone—and we are called to follow His example (1 John 2:6).

   John‬ ‭3‬:‭31‬-‭34‬

“He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all. And what He has seen and heard, that He testifies; and no one receives His testimony. He who has received His testimony has certified that God is true. For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure.”

   4. Paul Used Words Taught by the Spirit, Not Man’s Wisdom

   1 Corinthians 2:13

“Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Spirit teaches; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”

Paul contrasted Spirit-given words with man-made terminology. Any word not taught by the Spirit—even if logical or modern—must not be the foundation of our doctrine or communication.

   5. Do Not Add to or Subtract from God’s Word

   Deuteronomy 4:2

“Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it…”

   Proverbs 30:5–6

“Every word of God is pure… Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.”

   Revelation 22:18–19

There is a consistent warning throughout Scripture: God’s words are complete and sufficient. Adding new ideas, new terms, or new interpretations not found in the Bible is spiritually dangerous.

   6. God’s Words Are Spirit and Life—Ours Must Echo Them

   John 6:63

“The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”

Our words must carry the same spiritual life by reflecting what Christ has spoken. Worldly expressions may sound insightful but lack life from God.

   7. Renewing the Mind Means Submitting to Scripture Alone

   Romans 12:2

“Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…”

   Colossians 3:16

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…”

Our minds are renewed not by modern philosophy or therapeutic speech, but by the rich indwelling of Scripture, governing our thoughts and vocabulary.

   8. Speak Only as the Oracles of God

   1 Peter 4:11

“If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God…”

This command applies to all believers, not just preachers. Every conversation of disciples of Jesus should reflect the tone, content, and language of the Bible.

   9. Faith Comes by the Word Alone

   Romans 10:17

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Faith is not stirred by human logic or worldly terminology. It is birthed by hearing what God has said. Nothing more, nothing less.

Contentment and Confidence in God’s Word and Presence

   Hebrews 13:5–6 (NKJV)

“Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have.

For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’

   So we may boldly say:

‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?’”

This verse illustrates how Scripture teaches us to speak from what is written:

1. “Let your conduct be without covetousness…”

Covetousness is condemned in both law and gospel (Exodus 20:17; Luke 12:15; Colossians 3:5). Using God’s Word, we are taught contentment, not through man-made ideas, but through His promises.

2. “Be content with such things as you have.”

Contentment is not psychological—it is spiritual. It’s grounded in trust in God’s sufficiency (1 Timothy 6:6–8; Philippians 4:11–13).

3. “For He Himself has said…”

Every exhortation in the Christian life is anchored in what God has already said. (Deuteronomy 31:6; Joshua 1:5; Malachi 3:6)

4. “So we may boldly say…”

We do not invent bold declarations. We only say what God has already declared. (Psalm 118:6)

Conclusion: Let the Word of Christ Govern Our Tongues

   Colossians 4:6

“Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt…”

Let our speech be seasoned with Scripture, not philosophy. Our vocabulary must come from the inspired, preserved, and sufficient Word of God.

Rejecting unscriptural terminology is not legalism; it is loyalty. It is obedience to the command to speak what God has spoken, trust what He has promised, and think with the mind of Christ as revealed in His Word.
