REPENTANCE BEFORE AMNESTY: A Prophetic Cry to the Christian Immigrant Community in the United States Dr Josimar Salum

REPENTANCE BEFORE AMNESTY: A Prophetic Cry to the Christian Immigrant Community in the United States

Dr Josimar Salum

06/27/2025

The debate about immigration, especially in the Christian context, involves not only political and legal aspects but also a profound spiritual dimension. Over more than 30 years serving wholeheartedly among fellow Brazilians and many immigrants from other nations, I have observed recurring situations that reveal serious distortions, both in legality and in moral integrity.

On one hand, there is a clear and urgent need for immigration reform that can bring dignified and humane solutions to millions of people. On the other hand, one cannot ignore that many immigrants, consciously or not, end up wounding this land by breaking laws, opening the door to spiritual and social consequences that go far beyond simple illegality.

There are concrete cases that illustrate this reality. People enter the United States with a tourist visa, already planning to work and stay illegally, taking on a lie at the very moment of entry. Others, holders of a student visa, go on to work even though they know the law does not allow it, justifying themselves with phrases like, “No one will find out; I have to survive.”These same people, however, sign documents formally declaring they will not work, which constitutes deliberate fraud.

There are also sham marriages carried out exclusively to obtain immigration benefits. Petitions without a truthful basis are presented under the pretext of “helping someone,” but in practice, far from the truth, whether in religious processes or asylum requests.

Another concerning aspect involves businesses that, in order to avoid tax obligations, opt for informal and unregistered payments, encouraging “under the table” agreements. In many of these cases, there is no demonstration of repentance; on the contrary, there is even a certain pride in the ability to circumvent the rules, under the justification of sustaining and providing for the family.

Such behaviors, besides violating civil law, create serious spiritual breaches. It is like mocking the laws of the country that welcomes them, trying to gain advantages without respecting its norms. Added to this is the reality of people who cross the border in absolutely irregular conditions, fully aware they do not meet any legal criteria, and yet try to legitimize such practices, rationalizing their attitudes in the name of economic or social issues.

In this scenario, the need for genuine repentance in the Christian community stands out. The text of 2 Chronicles 7:14 warns us: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” Many prefer to treat these acts as mere justified mistakes, but they remain sins that break legal and spiritual principles, leaving doors open for painful consequences.

Therefore, it is urgent to proclaim a clear message of repentance that awakens consciences and especially sensitizes the Christian immigrant community. Even when these practices occurred before a genuine conversion to Christ, there is room for confession and a cry for forgiveness, so that God can fully work restoration in these lives.

A worrying phenomenon has also been observed in immigration legal practice: unscrupulous lawyers and professionals, known for fraudulent practices and for promising “shortcuts,” were repeatedly hired by people of faith, often without any ethical questioning. This was also seen in the Massachusetts region, where there was a high number of cases sponsored by churches involving identical petitions and dubious advice, evidencing a pattern of complicity. Even before the judge, many falsely declared they had not received help, when it was clear that the entire process was intermediated. The predictable result, in many cases, was the denial of requests and the worsening of their immigration situation.

This reflection does not aim to condemn, but rather to make an urgent call to repentance, conversion, and the practice of justice. It is necessary to recognize that many have abused the system, seeking shortcuts and justifications to circumvent rules, harming principles of honesty and integrity. The book of Proverbs reminds us: “Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but those who keep the law resist them” (Proverbs 28:4). And further: “Better is the poor who walks in his integrity than one who is perverse in his ways, though he be rich”(Proverbs 28:6).

These truths invite us to reflect on the importance of remaining firm in truth, respecting norms, and submitting to just principles — not merely out of fear of human law, but as a living testimony of the character of Christ.

The repentance that is needed should not be generic, but profound, transformative, and specifically directed toward the practices mentioned: lies to obtain visas, false statements, sham marriages, fraudulent petitions, informal payments, tax evasion, and benefits unjustly obtained — behaviors that offend the values of honesty and violate the justice of God.

The Word reinforces: “Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy” (Proverbs 28:13). May there be courage and discernment to proclaim this message without fear, calling the community of faith to live in the light of justice and righteousness, not only in speech, but especially in attitudes and in the willingness to humble themselves, avoiding judging and condemning others or taking pride in any sense of self-righteousness.

This reflection echoes the call of John the Baptist, who proclaimed to the people: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near” (Matthew 3:2), reminding us that repentance is not merely a feeling of guilt, but implies a change of mindset and conduct, with concrete results and visible fruit.

This analysis points to a sensitive and urgent matter, so often silenced: the need for true repentance within the Christian immigrant community. May the voice of the Holy Spirit find hearts willing to listen and obey, so that there may be healing, restoration, and transformation both on a personal level and collectively.

And may Almighty God grant us His amnesty, even before, by His mercy, He might move the country to offer any amnesty to immigrants.

Psalm 103 (excerpt)

6 The Lord works righteousness

and justice for all the oppressed.

7 He made known his ways to Moses,

his deeds to the people of Israel.

8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious,

slow to anger, abounding in love.

9 He will not always accuse,

nor will he harbor his anger forever;

10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve

or repay us according to our iniquities.

11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,

so great is his love for those who fear him;

12 as far as the east is from the west,

so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

13 As a father has compassion on his children,

so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;

14 for he knows how we are formed,

he remembers that we are dust.

REPENTANCE IS THE CHANGING OF CONCEPTS Dr Josimar Salum

REPENTANCE IS THE CHANGING OF CONCEPTS

Dr Josimar Salum

"My thoughts are not your thoughts."

It is necessary to repent, to change our thoughts, because what we believe, what we say, what we learn, what we study in theology, what we have been taught, needs to be revised. We need to change our thinking.

You have to discover the revelation of the Gospel, the revelation of Jesus.

What does the Bible really teach? It is necessary to make an enormous effort to remove all these heavy things that have trapped us, that are not satisfying.

Sometimes we don't even feel the Presence of God. When we hear sermons, they are empty; knowledge preaching only.

Week after week, Sunday after Sunday, and now with the advent of the cell phone you hear messages of all kinds, from everywhere, your choice.

Then, in the pandemic, believers could choose who they would listen to, right?

Who would they watch on Sunday? Then they heard the 8:00 preaching, the 10:00 preaching, the midday preaching, the 2:00 preaching and it continues the same way.

Why?

"Because My thoughts are not your thoughts."

Repenting has to do with a change of concept, it has to do with a change in thinking, understanding, knowing,  intellection, practice that will bring about a transformation and change in your life.

I told Carlinhos Felix this when he wrote the song, "I want to go back to the beginning of everything, I want to review my concepts, I want to go back to the first Love."

Returning to the first Love does not mean returning to the "jesus" you encountered in childhood, it may not be.

Returning to the first Love does not mean returning to the day you were converted, the day you decided to follow Jesus.

To return to the first Love is to return to Jesus.

I hear a lot of people saying, "Ah, we have to go back to the early church."

We don't have to go back to the early church at all!

There are others who say that we are going back to Eden! We don't have to go back to Eden, we don't have to go back to Paradise, we have to turn totally to God, to Jesus, before the creation of the world, before He had done anything, that's where we have to go back.

Hardening the heart

If your walk with Jesus was interrupted by self-indulgence, spiritual indifference, ecclesiastical routine or a constant living in sin you can not and should not live another minute without seeking Him with all your might for mercy, brokenness and repentance.

Don't stop seeking Jesus until you find true Peace.

The land on which you stand is shaky, your soul is at risk.

Don't live a little longer to make your heart hardened even more.

There is nothing worse from God than having your heart hardened by Him.

Lord, give me a heart with a baby's skin.

Where is America Heading

Where is America Heading

By Hector P Torres

In June of 1996 my dear friend and then pastor Gary Kinnaman preached a prophetic message that to this day makes me think about the direction America is heading. Jim Nelson Black authored a landmark book called WHEN NATIONS DIE, AMERICA ON THE BRINK. In that book he identifies TEN WARNING signs of a culture in crisis that eventually lead to the death of a nation.

The three most significant areas that lead to the downfall of any culture are those that most influence their society:

Social Decay (Political, Government and Business)

1. Increasing Lawlessness

2. Lack of Economic Discipline

3. Rising bureaucracy.

Cultural Decay (Education and Culture)

4. The Decline in Education

5. Weakening of Cultural Foundations

6. Loss of respect for tradition

7. Increase in Materialism

Moral Decay (Family and Religion)

8. Loss of Moral Values

9. Decay of Biblical Values and Beliefs

10. Devaluing of Human Life

In the first area of Social decay; Increasing lawlessness: the 2010 National Statistics reveal that in a population of close to 310 million people there were 10,329,000 crimes committed, 1,250,000 violent crimes, over 15,000 murders, 9,000,000 property crimes, 85,000 forcible rapes, 800,000 aggravated assaults, 8,500,000 Burglaries and thefts reported and close to 1,000,000 vehicles stolen

In the area of loss of economic discipline the national bureau indicates that in 2012 our national debt is close to 16 TRILLION dollars an increase of close to 7 TRILLION in the last 3 years of the Obama administration.

That National Debt exceeds 100% of the National Gross Domestic Product, It is estimated that if we continue on the same path our national debt will be over 20 trillion dollars by 2016, which would be an INCREASE of 87% in just TWO presidential terms.

In the area of bureaucracy our Federal government keeps expanding at the fastest rate of growth in the last 5 years.

In the second area Cultural decay; America’s system of education is at an all-time crisis and has fallen well behind that of EVERY other major advanced economy. It has declined to 17th in Science, 25th in Math, 79th in Elementary School enrollment and now ranks 23rd in the world. Not even in the top 20.

We are number one in guns per capita, most crime amongst rich nations, by far the largest amount of debt in the world; we are also 1st in the world in Obesity, 27th in life expectancy and 18th in Diabetes.

We have lost all respect for traditional values, marriage, virginity, respect for elders, family values, decent language, respect for authority, obedience of laws, etc.

We live in a society lacking in virtues and abundant in vice plus enamored with consumption and material possessions.

Americans live in a pursuit of material possessions for comfort and entertainment, In spite of all this America is experiencing and increase in teen suicide, depression, divorce, disintegration of the family, bankruptcy and despair.

In the area of Moral and Spiritual decay we are rapidly falling into a morality cliff of decadence, Homosexuality, Lesbianism, sexual promiscuity, sister wives, same sex marriages, teen pregnancy, adultery, fornication.

Abortion on demand, Loss of Church attendance, Increase of Islam, persecution of Christian Values, False religions and philosophies, Satanism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Mormonism, etc. Divorce rates in the Evangelical churches are comparable and sometimes higher than secular marriages.

The prophet Habakkuk lived at a time when the nation of Judah was living one of its most critical periods.

The depths of violence, oppressive measures against its citizens, the collapse of the legal systems, treatment of aliens and the poor, Evil men were in control and the prophet cries out to God asking how long could this go on without HIS punishment. Does this sound like America?

How can this be changed? The Church MUST wake up and reverse its course.

IF MY PEOPLE WHICH ARE CALLED BY MY NAME SHOULD HUMBLE THEMSELVES AND PRAY AND TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS, THEN I WILL HEAR FROM HEAVEN AND I WILL HEAL THEIR LAND.

We must repent and intercede for our nation.

We must also begin to bless the needy, the alien, the poor, the widows and the orphans, the homeless, the sick, the elderly.

We must come into a UNITY of purpose and vision.

Such unity requires an end to suspicion, criticism, judgementalism, jealousy, envy, pride, arrogance and most of all ETHNIC AND RACIAL prejudice.

We must serve God by serving the needy and seek HIS Kingdom.

Yes there is hope, we both seek God and pray or HE will bring judgment upon this nation that will cause HIS CHURCH to seek him and pray.

Either way, He is about to do something that even if it were told to us we would not believe it.
