Is it important to be baptized?
Josimar Salum
“So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.” Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.” The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?”Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?” And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him." Acts 8: 27-38
A God-fearing man finds that to be a disciple of Jesus, he must be baptized. And he himself contravenes who taught him about Jesus Christ to baptize him.
Today it is emphasized that one must teach someone about the things of God in a special class so that one may decide whether or not to be baptized.
The truth is that what initiates a person to be a disciple of Jesus is baptism.
“Jesus came and spake to them, saying, All power is given to me in heaven and in earth. Go therefore, make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit; teaching them to keep all the things that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always until the end of the century. ”Matthew 28: 18-20
What makes a person a disciple of Jesus is baptism. Without baptism this person has not even become a disciple yet.
There is nothing clearer than this Truth in the entire New Testament.
“When they heard these things, their hearts were moved, and they asked Peter and the other apostles, What shall we do, brothers? Peter answered them, “Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For to you is the promise, to your children, and to all that are yet far off, even as many as the Lord our God will call. Then those who accepted his word were baptized, and there was an increase on that day of nearly three thousand people. ”Acts 2: 37-39, 41
